Historic Mayer Properties

  • 12780 Central (also known as Lower Main) Mayer Business Block National Register of Historic Places Built in 1908 from red brick manufactured in Mayer. Originally built as a saloon and dance hall, barbershop and market. Now occupied by an antique store.
     
  • Next door – The building was built in 1930 and served as the post office until 1958. Now occupied by a print shop.
     
  • Mayer State Bank - 1918Across the street – Mayer State Bank building was built in 1918 and closed during the depression, Mayer Hotel was built in 1897 by Joe Mayer (now apartments) and the red brick buildings which were originally Cribs (bordellos). Cribs were built in 1902 because there was no more room in the hotel next door.
     


  • 13010 Central Assay Office Built prior to 1900 (exact date unknown). Originally part of a mining claim; has the original structure of redwood. Building sets on redwood piers on slabs of onyx from the old Mayer onyx mine. This building once used as a bakery. Ghosts of a man and a woman have been seen. The man seems friendly; is tall, dark and slender. The woman appears to be attired in a lounging gown. 
     
  • Across the street is The White House Hotel, built in 1904 by Frank W. Wagner, sold to H. B. White in 1908. Arizona Governor Hunt and actor Tom Mix were once guests. Currently owned by Clyde and Sonya McDonald and occupied by a caretaker. Clyde Edward McDonald was born in Mayer to Ursel Irene and Clyde Allen McDonald. Sonya Owen Hickey was born in Prescott to Owen and Martha Hickey. Both grew up in Mayer and attended local elementary and high schools. Graduating in 1951, they represented 50% of the graduating class. Clyde and Sonya married in 1955 at the Mayer Catholic Church and then moved to Phoenix. In 1961 they moved to Peru for 6 years and then settled in Phoenix again.

  • Previous schoolhouse is across the street on 5th Street at corner of Main and was built and donated to the town by Joe Mayer. After the red brick schoolhouse was built, this building was used for a community building. (Currently a private home)
     
  • 12701 Main Street (corner of 3rd Street)
     
  • 1906 Victorian bungalow built by Wilbur “Burr” Mayer, son of Joseph Mayer. The home still has original oak coffered 12 foot ceilings, oak floors, oak built-in sideboard with antique leaded glass, oak moldings and doors and oak built-in library cabinets with antique leaded glass. It is now a private residence.
     
  • 12731 Main Street Bob Katy House and Barn built in 1916 in box style. Built by a shoe cobbler and miner with 1 x 12 wood nailed to a frame. Walls were lined with newspaper for insulation. Interior walls are faced with Beaver Board or oil cloth and painted. Journals found in the home describe details of mining excavations down to how much coffee, hay for horses, etc. were packed for a 2 week trip.
     
  • 13050 Main Street (corner of Pine and Main) This home, built in 1917, was the home of Bill Cordes. The town of Cordes was named after his family. His nephew Henry Cordes attended Mayer schools. The home has not had many renovations; there is an old wood mining shack in the backyard. This is set up as an old miner might have lived. There is an old 2-holer behind it. Another shack on the property was a carriage house.
     
  • Next door is the old Mayer Hospital built in 1902. This building is in territorial style architecture with wide covered porch which accommodated patients in wheel chairs. It served this region as a TB sanitarium. It is now a private residence.
     
  • 13170 Main Street, Big Bug Antique Barn Originally built in 1916 as a barn to store pipe and supplies for the town water system and also served as a Model T agency.
     
  • 10199 S. Jefferson (Jefferson and Wicks) Original Catholic church built in 1908. A bar owner named Ish Davis donated the land, Sadie Mayer donated $800 and two carpenters from Prescott were hired for $435. The bell was purchased for $40. It remained a Catholic church until 1982. In 1996 the church was extensively renovated and opened as a tearoom on weekends. It is currently a private residence.
